"Klan’ protest at Hart meeting
A man dressed in a white hood and gown, similar to that worn by the Ku Klux Klan, protested outside the Friends Meeting House in Manchester Street last evening. Inside the Christchurch branch of Hart was holding its annual meeting. The “klansman” with “Support the 1985 All Black tour to South Africa” emblazoned on his chest, was one of a quartet of, rugby .F
tour supporters outside the meeting place. They illustrated their protest against Hart’s anti-tour stance by distributing leaflets to passers-by, sticking them on parked cars, and letting off strings of firecrackers. . The remaining leaflets were then flung -into the meeting room by the sheeted protester. The meeting of about 40 Hart members covered- a
range of topics from finance to strategies for, 1985. Hart will maintain the Saturday morning picket outside the Cellar Ghost Liquor Cellars in Riccarton Road until at least Christmas. It is protesting against the bottle store’s trade in South African wines. Some 112 Hart members from throughout New Zealand hhve bought shares in Quill . 'Humphreys,- "Ltd, R ■ .
owner of the store, to try to stop it importing South African wines. Members heard yesterday that share dividends would be used to cover protest costs, such as photocopying and postage. The Christchurch branch of Hart will meet other Christchurch anti-racist groups on November 7 to discuss co-ordinating protests against Waitangi Day celebrations. ■ ■' - ' > ' ■
