Govt distaste for whaling reaffirmed

Wellington reporter The Government has reaffirmed New Zealand’s support for the International Whaling Commission. This comes after word from Japan that its sperm whaling expedition in the north Pacific has been recalled home pending the resumption of bilateral talks between Japan and the United States. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said that the many New Zealanders interested in international efforts to halt all commercial whaling would be relieved to hear this good news. He reaffirmed New Zea-

land’s full support for the guidelines of the commission in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

“New Zealand would regret it very much if any sperm whales were to be be lulled in the northern Pacific,” Mr Lange said. If that were to happen, New Zealand would record its disappointment in Tokyo. It was New Zealand’s hope that the Japanese Government would support the moratorium of the commission on all commercial whaling that was to start in 1985.

“New Zealanders want the slaughter of whales to stop,” he said.
