New committee on children
A Children and Young Persons sub-committee of the Christchurch City Council will be formed. The subcommittee will monitor council policy in planning, recreation, youth, housing, health, childcare, and community development for its impact on children and young people and to ensure consideration is given to this group.
It will also assist in formation of policy in consultation with organisations and schools representing' young people.
The work of the subcommittee, which is made up of two councillors, a Youth Council member, the City Community Adviser, a child-care worker, and a
recreation officer, will be reviewed after six months. Sub-lease The recent valuation will increase the rent of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce in the old municipal offices building in Oxford Terrace. The City Council, the building’s owner, is required to charge a rent of not less than 5 per cent of the building’s valuation. For the last five years the rent has been $3OOO a year. The valuation has been $60,000. The revaluation values the building at $235,000, which makes the rent $11,750 a year. This will come into effect when the rent freeze is lifted from March 1, 1985.
The Chamber of - Commerce’s lease of the building will expire in 1988. Skating An ice-skating centre in Raycroft Street has been given approval for a public building licence. Mr J. Vryenhoek intends to run an ice-rink, video games room, and coffee shop at the building, which will be known as the Big Apple Centre. The licence was approved by the community services and health committee of the City Council yesterday for 1050 people.
The request for the licence to apply between midnight on Saturdays and midnight on Sundays was denied, and the council
policy of midnight to 3 a.m. and 8 aLm. to-11.30 p.m. on Sundays was adopted. Merry-go-round Brighton Mail’s merry-go-round will continue to run. Mr P. F. Daley was granted a renewal of the licence to run the merry-go-round on Saturdays. Some complaints had been received from businessmen about the amusement blocking off veranda signs and making access difficult The committee recommendation for renewal set the fee at an annual rental of $550, the same as last year.
Licences for funeral directors, offensive trades, public buildings, and beekeepers will increase slightly. With the exception of funeral directors, the increase will come into effect from January 1. Funeral directors will have to pay more from June 1. 1985. The increases are: funeral directors, $2 to $37; offensive trades, $3 to $37; public buildings, $3 to $37 for accommodation less than 500 and $5O for more; and $2 to $5 for beekeepers. Neighbourhood The Linwood Neighbourhood Committee has been officially recognised by the committee.
