Brian Close resigns
NZPA-Reuter London The former England captain,. Brian Close, resigned yesterday as chairman of Yorkshire’s cricket subcommittee in the latest episode to the protracted troubles at the county club. Close’s decision to step down, while keeping his place on the general committee, follows the re-elec-tion last Saturday of the wicket-keeper, David Bairstow, as Yorkshire captain.
Close, also a former Yorkshire skipper, nomin-
ated the 44-year-old Geoff Boycott for the captaincy even though the former England opener did not want the job. In the event, the cricket sub-committee overturned his recommendation. Close said: “It is becoming increasingly obvious that Geoff Boycott’s position as committee man and player has created unrest and unease in the team and undermined my authority as cricket chairman and David Bairstow’s as captain.”
