Books may miss exhibition
PA Auckland A sponsorship shortfall of $lOOO means 80 New Zealand children’s books may miss a prestigious West German exhibition. The New Zealand Children’s Literature Association has raised only $lOOO of $2OOO it needs to send the books. It has unsuccessfully sought gifts from Government departments, banks and airlines. Several publishers have given small amounts. The association has undertaken to send the chilren’s books to the June, 1985, exhibition at the International Youth Library in Munich.
The president of the association, Mrs Beverley Barnes, said the money was needed soon, as the books must be shipped in January. The non-profit-making organisation had “dried up” trying to raise funds, she said. The money is needed to translate the books’ blurbs into German, cataloguing and freight. Children’s books published since 1980 by more than 30 Nevf Zealand authors, including award-winning selections, have been chosen for the exhibition. A previous exhibition at Munich in 1981 was sponsored by the National Library. It was unable to sponsor it a second time.
