Horse and pony care
Sir—l was one of the Horse Protection Society members who visited a Kaiapoi property and, in the absence of the parent spoke briefly to the daughter of the correspondent J. E. Pentecost (October 3). On inspection of the we found it to be reasonably
healthy. However the complaint was not just one of poor condition, but inadequate treatment. The society acts on telephone calls from concerned anonymous people motivated by compassion and not maliciousness. People such as these are an essential link for our activities in preventing cruelty to horses, whether intentional or otherwise. Suitably informed and trained members of the Horse Protection Society are sent to investigate each complaint. They have a relatively unbiased attitude and either own horses or have spent a lot of time with them and are more than willing to help or offer advice. However, as with many cases of animal cruelty, they can tread on people’s toes. .— Yours etc., C. SOUTHERWOOD. October 23, 1984.
