Rail fares up

PA Wellington Fares for long-distance rail travel will rise 6 per cent from Sunday. The increase was to cover the rise in the Railways’ fuel bill after the 20 per cent devaluation in July, said a Ministerial private secretary, Mr John Collyns, yesterday. It affected the Northerner, the Silver Fern, and services from Wellington to Gisborne, Wellington to Palmerston North, Christchurch to Picton, and Christchurch to Greymouth. But it did not affect the Southerner.

The new fares are (previous fares in brackets): Silver Fern, Wellington to Auckland, $59.20 ($55.80); Northerner, Wellington to Auckland, $52.70 ($49.70); Wellington to Gisborne, $33 ($31.10); Wellington to Palmerston North, $13.80 ($13); Christchurch to Picton, $21.90 ($20.60); Christchurch to Greymouth, $l5 ($14.10).
