Potato prices low

Over-production of table Eotatoes in the South Island as resulted in prices dropping as low as 49c for a 25kg bag. Wet conditions in the 1983-1984 growing season favoured growth and had distorted the proportion of seed potatoes to table potatoes. Producers of seed potatoes had not suffered, although growers of table potatoes had been hard hit in some areas, including Marshland, Lincoln, Leeston, Belfast, and Rangiora. An Ashburton supermarket had sold 25kg bags for 49c each when the cost of the bag in which the potatoes were packed was about 30c. Prices had been affected for several months, although seemed to be rising again, according to an industry source.

Some dumping had occurred, although sales of 1500 tonnes to Fiji and the lower North Island had provided relief.
