Country “sports”
Sir,—l agree with your correspondent Stuart Thomson in his criticism of the October 14 “Country Calendar” programme. Surely the producer was hoping to expose cruelty perpetrated under the name of entertainment? If not, and this is the type of entertainment most New Zealanders still enjoy, then we must be a decadent society. People who are amused by the spectacle and insensitive to the suffering of creatures unable to defend themselves are unlikely to have any finer feelings towards their fellow men. It appears that more than the S.P.C.A. should be> alerted. The media, education authorities and churches should also become involved in raising standards. I was shocked and disgusted and pray that this was a very isolated case. — Yours, etc., N. AITCHISON. October 19, 1984.
