Identification
Sir,-A report in “The Press” of October 18 perturbed me. It was a police report involving two people presumed to be selling advertising under false pretence. The male is described as “European, about 40 years of age and of average build. He was well-dressed and had a slightly receding hair-line.” The woman, however, is described in a one-word, blatantly sexist term — “tarty.” What exactly does that mean in terms of height, build, hair colour, age, race? I would have hoped our police were trained in effective questioning enabling them to present unbiased information. Doubtless witnesses often give descriptions which involve value judgments, but surely it is the police’s task not to accept these but to discover the observable facts on which they are based — Yours, etc., JAN PATTERSON.
