Nursing shortage

Sir,—l find it incredible in this so-called welfare country that nursing staff are being pushed to their limits in coping with their workload, and are forced to consider a reduction of medical services to the public. We have a high number of unemployed, many of whom would take up nursing, given the training and opportunity. This would relieve the pressure on existing staff without placing their jobs in jeopardy. To enable this the Government could channel more money towards our medical institutions, thus giving benefit and health

to all New Zealanders, instead of spending millions of dollars buying weapons and equipment to maim and kill. I and many others would be happier about how our taxes are being spent.—Yours, etc., R. J. CLARK. October 19, 1984.
