First for Canty golfers
The Canterbury No. 1 team won the Booth Shield for the first time when the Caltex junior inter-provincial golf championship ended at the Russley Golf Club yesterday. Canterbury finished with 1611 strokes, just two strokes ahead of Waikato, with Wellington finishing third on 1614. The tournament, hosted by the Canterbury Junior Golfing Society, attracted nine teams, from Bay of Plenty, Canterbury (2), Marlborough, Nelson, Poverty Bay, Taranaki, Waikato, and Wellington.
Teams comprised up to six boys and six girls with seven scores (including at least one girl’s score) counting. They played three rounds, two on Sunday and one yesterday. The North Island won the inter-island contest held in conjunction with the Booth Shield, finishing with 1702 strokes to South Island's 1733. It won the Clements Shield Challenge Trophy. The best gross scores were compiled by Martin Veale (Canterbury), boys, and Jan Cook (Bay of Plenty), girls.
