Zimbabwe fights for draw

NZPA special correspondent Harare Zimbabwe, fighting for a draw, was 84 for the loss of two wickets in its second innings at lunch yesterday at Harare Sports Club on the last day of its third three-day match against Young New Zealand. The home side followed on yesterday morning after being all out on Saturday for 202 in reply to the Young New Zealand’s 499. Losing the match will mean the loss of the series of four three day matches, the first having been drawn and New Zealand having taken the second. Zimbabwe suffered the early loss of Kevin Walton’s wicket for 2 at the tenth ball, while Ali Shah’s fell about 70 minutes later to a ball from the Young New Zealand vicecaptain, Martin Snedden, that cut in low and tore out his middle stump. The Zimbabwe captain, Andy Pycroft, back on the

field after two days with influenza, was seven not out at lunch, having been dropped off the first ball he faced, while Robin Brown’s score stood at 37. The guest of honour at the ground was the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Mr Robert Mugabe, who spent two hours watching the game and was later introduced to the teams.
