Horse jumping

Two jump-offs, the second of them against the clock, were required yesterday before Brian Costello’s horse, Merry Orbit, prevailed in the A and B grade championship at the Canterbury area of the New Zealand Horse Society’s jumping show at McLeans Island. The first jump-off involved three riders — David Hutton, of Timaru, with Spruce Goose, one of two horses he had in the competition; Julie Srhoy (Ashburton), with Silamond, her B grade mount; and Costello. Spruce Goose, the first horse to jump, knocked two rails and was penalised with eight faults, nut Silamond and Merry Orbit finished on terms with four faults. Samuel went first in the ride against time, but, surprisingly, Srhoy’s horse had rails down at two fences, and the championship was there for Costello to claim. The win puts. Merry Orbit into A grade, and the win by Adrian Cromie and Kirk in the C grade championship means the combination are upgraded to B grade. Leah Meares rode her mount, Barnicle Bill, to success in the A and B grade pony championship, and took third place with her second pony, Coco. The runner-up was Chris Harris, on Fury. The strong southerly winds proved a nightmare for course builders and competitors alike, with some gusts toppling fences just as horses were approaching them.
