Young N.Z. dismisses Zimbabwe

NZPA special correspondent Harare South Young New Zealand, after amassing 499 in its first innings, on Saturday dismissed Zimbabwe for 202 runs on the second day of their three day match at the Harare Sports Club. The off spinner, John Bracewell, led the Young New Zealand bowling attack, taking six for 48 off 15.1 overs. The home side, still 297 runs behind and playing without its captain Andy Pycroft, will have to follow on when the game resumes on Monday. Pycroft, who has been the mainstay of the home side batting order in most of the matches against the tourists, has been suffering from influenza and did not bat. Graeme Hick, however, proved a superb substitute by scoring 95, his highest score in first-class cricket. His innings off 104 balls included 17 fours. Hick was the last batsman out when he swung at a ball from Bracewell, but missed and was struck on the pads. Apart from resistance from Kevin Walton, 23, and David Houghton, 33, the Zimbabwean innings was a disaster. Three batsmen, including opener Ali Shah, brought back into the national side for this game, failed to score. Earlier, Young New Zealand was all out an hour before lunch for 499. The Canterbury allrounder, Vaughan Brown, was left the not out batsman just 15 runs short of a century. The score, obtained in eight hours and 20 minutes was the highest against the Zimbabwe national side in 17 years. The chief scorers were Paul McEwan, with 153, in 270 minutes, Peter Briasco, 89 and Brown, 85 not out. Lower-order batsman Derek Stirling provided one of the few lively periods in the match with a 33 in 22 minutes with two sixes and three fours off 25 balls. The Young New Zealand side will be looking for an early breakthrough today as a win in this, the third three-day game of the fourmatch series, would put them in an unbeatable position. The sides were to meet yesterday at the Harare Sports Club for the third and deciding one-day limited overs match. Both sides have won a game in that series. YOUNG NEW ZEALAND First innings T.
