India sights test target
NZPA-AFP Lahore India was on its way to achieving its principal target of avoiding the follow-on in the first match of the three-test cricket series against Pakistan at the ■ Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore yesterday. At lunch on the third day of the first test, the tourists were 92 for one wicket in reply to Pakistan’s first innings total of 428 for nine declared yesterday morning. The Pakistanis made an early breakthrough by claiming the wicket of Anshuman Gaekwad, who was bowled by Jalaluddin for four with the seven runs on the board. However, Sunil Gavaskar, back as captain in his 100th test, and Dilip Vengsarkar played slowly but surely and had put on 85 runs by lunch in their unbeaten second wicket partnership. Adjustments were made to the playing hours to provide an opportunity for the cricket fans to offer their Friday prayers. Play was extended by half an hour in the first session, 15 minutes being taken off each of the two remaining sessions.
