Fun on stage

Cantus Theatre Company is a new, young company, determined to put fun on to the Christchurch stage. It aims to provide local theatre-goers with high quality musicals using the talents of young actors and actresses, according to its founders. "Our shows will be modern and enthusiastic, they won’t be the traditional-type musical," said Mr Alan Doak.

The company’s premier show will be the lut-musi-cal, "Grease." “With its Top-20 music score and vibrant chorus work, it is sure to be popular,” Mr Doak said. The season will run from November 30 to December 10 in the Ngaio Marsh Theatre at the Student

Union Building. Auditions for the 40-strong cast will be held on October 1 to 3.

The show will be directed by Martyn Duffy, well known for his performances at the Court Theatre. He is presently a co-director at the Christchurch Arts Employment Programme. Choreography will be an important part of the show. The choreographer will be Sandra Rasmussen, who teaches dance locally and has made regular appearances at the Court Theatre and on television. Mr Doak and Mi Andrew Searle, the co-fouhder of the company, have both been involved in several performances with the University of Canterbury Music Society. Both have now left university
