Court moves to save Taj Mahal
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi India’s Supreme Court has ordered measures to. save one of the world’s most famous monuments, the Taj Mahal, from “marble can-. cer,” the Press Trust of India said. A petition to the Court said the Taj, a 334-year-old .white marble tomb built by the Moghul emperor, Shah Jehan, for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, was threatened by air pollution from a nearby oil refinery.
Sulphur dioxide from the refinery, turning to sulphuric acid as it mixed with oxygen and moisture in the air, wafted towards the Taj and caused what the petition called marble cancer. It said chimneys and ducts in the factory should be closed, and also asked for nearby thermal plants and foundries to be moved. P.T.I. .said the Court ordered the state Government of Uttar Pradesh, in northern . India, to investigate -ffie demands.
