Air N.Z. buying engines

NZPA staff correspondent London

Air New Zealand is negotiating engine purchases worth tens of millions of "dollars at the Farnborough Air Show. The airline’s chief executive, Mr Norman Geary, has said that he was holding talks with competing manufacturers, Pratt and Whitney and General Electric, over engines for the three

Boeing 767 s which would fly domestic and international routes.

Each engine would be worth about ?8 million, Mr Geary said. The airline will need six engines for the three aircraft, plus spares. Mr Geary said that present practice was to buy aircraft and engines separately. The airshow had provided

a “convenient time to talk to the manufacturers.”

The purchases would not be finalised during the week-long show. “We’re going through the negotiating process,”! he said. Mr Geary'said that Air New Zealand had a range of decisions to make about the wide-b'odied new Boeings, including the type of galley and food preparation they would use, and seats.
