Comfrey

Sir, — Comfrey has been condemned by the Victorian Health Commission (“The Press,” August 23), yet, as reported on radio by Gillian Polson on August 22, has been declared safe by the British Government after extensive research. From an article on the Edinburgh Kingston Clinic’s findings, the conclusion is that it would need to be eaten intensively for a very long time to cause trouble; and is acceptable as an external application. As comfrey is incredibly effective in renewing damaged tissue, perhaps it follows that if used extensively after healing had occurred, it might produce excess tissue? On the other hand, I have seen it remove growths. Other al-

kaloids — “nitrogenous, alkaline substances” — are morphine, cocaine, and of course, some fertilisers, although the latter are inorganic. Nitrogen also forms fourfifths of the atmosphere, and occurs as proteins in animal and vegetable tissues. Perhaps all these controversies on issues force us to keep an open mind. — Yours, etc., N. W. MILANOVICH. August 28, 1984.
