Morris takes fifth title

Jan. Morris, Canterbury’s outstanding table tennis player, won her fifth New Zealand singles title at the national championships in Palmerston North yesterday. Miss Morris previously won the title in 1977, and in three consecutive years from 1979. In the final, she beat Shelley Rougher, of Auckland, 21-16, 21-18, 21-17. Mrs Rougher had earlier

eliminated the top seed, Christine Lee, of Auckland, in a semi-final. Miss Morris beat Ann Gyongyos, of Wellington, in her semi-final. Miss Morris thoroughly deserved her win in the final, playing much steadier table tennis than her opponent, Hiroyuki Abe, ranked 39 in the world, romped away with the men’s singles title, over Masahiro Maehara.
