PA Auckland The trade unionist, Mr Rob Campbell, said last evening that unions would seek an immediate wage increase of at least 10 per cent, in addition to tax cuts for lower-paid workers. Mr Campbell said unions had been forced into “a grabbing-back role” in the wake of the recent 20 per
cent devaluation. He would not say how much the Federation of Labour would seek, but said, "We are into a double-figure environment.” Mr Campbell said the federation had also put to the Government proposals for tax cuts for low-income earners. “Personally, I believe that
a devaluation of that size has meant that it is very difficult for trade unions to play the positive role in economic management that we envisaged us playing before the election,” he said. “We are forced to a significant extent into a policy position that will nullify the potential benefits of a devaluation.”
