More apply for teachers’ college

PA Wellington Applications for positions in primary teachers’ colleges are up about 25 per cent on last year. Mr Peter Atkinson, the Education Department’s director of personnel, has said that about 2500 people had applied for primary teacher training positions next year. This compared with about 2000 applicants for the 1984 intake. Applications for both primary and kindergarten training closed on August 20. Mr Atkinson said that the

number of people wanting to train as kindergarten teachers had risen about 10 per cent. However, the number of positions actually available still had to be decided by the Government. Mr Atkinson said that last year about 600 places in primary teachers’ colleges were allocated, but the Government had the right to raise or lower that figure. In the meantime, education boards could go ahead and formally accept up to half the number of last year’s quota.
