Space wars
Sir, — Vernon Wilkinson has a. valid point when he blames the world’s ills, not on religion, but on the irresponsible use of the fruits of knowledge and science. The key word being irresponsible. One hundred years ago people, supported by religion and philosophy held as ideals virtues such as honesty, loyalty, respect and responsibility. The general level of individual responsibility was probably as high or higher than today’s but their level of knowledge was low. Today we have highly educated people lacking spiritual guidance and understanding, with a falling level of responsibility. This imbalance between knowledge and responsibility is the cause of such diverse ills as illegitimacy, crime, pollution and-the threat of nuclear annihilation. To restore the balance of knowledge and responsibility, we need to realise that those old “virtues” are even more valid and desirable now than in the past. — F Yours, etc., T. R. LOUDON.
