Ban on nuclear weapons

Sir, — War is stupid. Nuclear war is oblivion. Someone must take the political lead in making a commitment to nuclear banishment. What are the risks? By shunning nuclear weaponry we can not possibly be in any greater danger than we already are, as it is readily admitted that nuclear war would be the most ghastly of all calamities. No part of the world would be likely to escape the consequences if nuclear war occurred between the two major powers. Let the United States heed the advice of Abraham Lincoln: “I don’t like that fellow, I

must get to know him better.” Also, let us give the people of the Soviet Union good reason to understand, to know, and trust us better. — Yours, etc P. B. WYE, Blenheim. August 27, 1984.
