Soviet cruiser sighted

NZPA-AP Copenhagen The Soviet Union’s newest and most powerful fighting ship, the battle cruiser Frunze, sailed through the Danish Straits yesterday en route to the North Atlantic, the Danish Navy reported. Captain Sven Gobel of the Navy’s operations command said that the 25,000-ton cruiser was accompanied by the guided missile frigate Krivak possibly for a practice run before it joins the Soviet northern fleet, based in Murmansk. “A few Soviet naval units were exercising in the North Atlantic, but I doubt they (the Frunze and Kri-

vak) will have anything to do with that,” he said. Danish military intelligence confirmed that the Frunze was fresh from a Leningrad shipyard and was believed to be virtually a carbon copy of the cruiser Kirov, built in 1981.

The new battle cruiser was described as a floating arsenal of conventional and nuclear missiles, with two 130 mm cannon and a helicopter pad on the fantail. Like the Kirov, Moscow’s first nuclear-powered navy ship, the Frunze’s dual nuclear reactors reportedly can produce a top speed of 35 knots.
