Break in kart racing
The last race meeting for two months will be held by the Christchurch Kart Club at the Carrs Road Raceway on Sunday, but there will be ample racing at other venues in that period. The last round of the five plus five series will be at Invercargill and the South Island sprint championships will be raced at Nelson. For the road racing drivers, the South Island road race championships will be at Ruapuna on September 30, and the first round of the Canterbury longcircuit series will be at that track early in October. The very efficient Murray Davies should again dominate the 100 cu. cm class on Sunday, but the youthful Nigel Wilkinson and Ross Rutherford are steadily improving. They have
recently gained promotion from junior ranks and have the ability to push Davies. Mark Childs is another developing driver. Now that he has his 125 cu. cm Rotax engine going reliably, Graham Stevens should continue his winning way in the class. Paul Crichton, inconsistent of late, Nigel Smith and Bob McWhinnie might present the main threats to Stevens. Biyce Coulbeck, who has dominated midget-class racing in the last four years, will be having his last drive on the track in that class, before graduating to the junior class. He would like to end on a winning note, although Dean Hyde, Myles Spicer and Aaron Crichton will provide keen opposition.
