Jet barred from U.S.

PA Auckland Air New Zealand’s decision not to fit its DCB cargo jet with a $5 million “hushkit” will bar the aircraft from all United States and American Samoa airports from the beginning of next year. A hushkit — to quieten engines — would be the only way to meet strict United States airport noise controls which come into force then. The airline does not consider the kits “cost effective," according to the “Auckland Star” newspaper. An airline spokesman, Mr Vern Mitchell, said the DCB was flying to the United States once every two weeks. “The withdrawal from America will free it to cope with increasing freight demands on the Tasman and Pacific Island services,” he said.
