Top cueist returns
Kevin Murphy, once considered the most talented cueist Canterbury had produced, will return to tournament play after a long absence this week-end. It is 22 years since Murphy, then in his early 20s, confirmed his potential by winning the New Zealand snooker title, and it is at least 15 years since he last contested a Canterbury tournament. He has entered the Canterbury open snooker championship, which begins at two venues tomorrow night, the Canterbury association room at Cuthberts. Green
and the Riccarton W.M.C. The section rounds will continue on Saturday, with the final rounds at Cuthberts Green on Sunday. Murphy is reported to have been playing well this season, but probably not well enough to get far in what is a strong' field. It includes the present New Zealand champion, Dale Kwok (Otago), the South Island champion, Brian Kirkness, and the Canterbury champion, Dave Meredith. Lou Adams, the winner last year, will also be favoured to reach the latter rounds.
