Jobless figure 20 p.c. higher?

PATRICIA HERBERT

By

in Wellington

The total number of unemployed may be 20 per cent higher than the official figures suggest, according to the Minister of Employment, Mr Burke. He made the statement in an address to the Engineering Employers’ Federation yesterday and said that it would be difficult to develop a package to deal with unemployment until the real extent of the problem was known. That was why the Government planned to institute

a quarterly household employment survey, he said. However, he warned that he had “no short answer” to what was a mounting economic and social problem. Long-term solutions were required. Of the employment promotion conference to be held, early next year, Mr Burke said that he hoped to achieve agreement on the best ways to increase job growth, policies to support those without work, and how to integrate the jobless back into an expanding workforce.
