Win for Ashburton harriers

The Ashburton No. 1 harrier team, which took fastest time in the recent Timaru to Waimate relay, finished first on handicap and was third fastest in the annual 'Metropolitan Life Port Hills relay on Saturday. The team, comprised B. Smith, J. Gamblin, B. Kilgour, S. Skilling and B. Henderson. It started from 63 minutes behind the front mark team and came through well to win by about a minute from University 3, with Anglican veterans another minute back. New Brighton men’s No. 1 team took fastest time of the day, with last year’s winners, Toe H, second. However, New Brighton, with virtually a No. 2 team, did not threaten Toe H’s record of 119 min 14s. University women No. 1 took fastest time in the women’s section, but again was well

outside the record of 142:43. Olympic veteran men came close to breaking their own record of 130:04, but just managed to hold out a determined challenge from Christchurch veterans No. 1, which had. a four-minute start and never came close to being caught by the men in red. Colleen Bardsley (Sumner) broke the women’s lap reqord on lap one, indicating a penchant for uphill running. She holds tte women’s record for the tough Soleares Avenue climb. On the same lap Bill Kennedy (Christchurch) was only two seconds outside Dennis O’Keefe’s record. Mary Warne, running for University No. 2, broke Joan Merrfieldrs record of 18:19 on lap four, while Neville Reid (Olympic) broke his own veteran record of 16:36 on the same lap.
