M.P.s sworn in today

PA Wellington The 95 new members of Parliament will be sworn in this afternoon and the Speaker will be elected, as the first session under the fourth Labour Government gets under way. The swearing-in ceremony, expected to take just over an hour, will be followed tomorrow by the official opening of Parliament by the Governor-Gen-eral, Sir David Beattie.

The House will debate an Imprest Supply Bill, providing the Government with money to continue running the country, on Friday. Members will gather in the debating chamber this afternoon when the bells summoning them are rung. In alphabetical order the members will be called to swear allegiance to the Queen, either by oath or by affirmation. The election of the Speaker will follow. The Government has chosen Sir Basil Arthur, member for

Timaru, for the post, but he has to be formally elected by the whole Parliament. After the swearing-in, the new Speaker will go to Government House to receive the Governor-Gen-eral’s formal approval.
