Hockey decision tonight
Members of the Canterbury Hockey Association’s competitions committee will meet with members of the Harewood and Selwyn clubs this evening to resolve the fate of the 1984 Noel Leeming senior championship. The two rounds of the championship (18 games) concluded last Saturday with Selwyn (the. 1983 champion) and Harewood (the 1982 champion) level on 31 points. It was expected that the clubs would share the Championship Shield, and the teams have resigned themselves to that fact. But late last week a C.H.A. official discovered that the rules for the championship made no allowance for the title to be shared. The championship - has been shared in the past — the last time was in the mid-1960s — but the C.H.A. changed its senior competition format in the early 1970 s to incorporate a grand final. The rule was changed at that stage to prevent the title being shared. When the competition reverted back to a round-robin in the late 1970 s the rule was left unchanged. There is a feeling in both clubs that the championship should not be decided on a play-off and this will be one of the points discussed this evening.
