Obituary Mr H. B. Lorigan

PA Wellington The death occurred in Hastings last week of Mr Horton Bernard (Horty) Lorigan, a colourful racing personality in every way. Mr Lorigan, aged 87, had lived in the Bay of Plenty in retirement for some years. He was a successful rider, particularly over fences, and his wins included an Otago Steeplechase on Stone Ginger. Mr Lorigan turned to training and was licensed by the New Zealand Racing Conference in 1922 and trained until 1947. Part of the time, in the 19305, was spent in Australia. Mr Lorigan trained during the golden era of Trent-

ham and his numerous winners included the 1930 Wellington Cup winner, Concentrate, and the 1931 C.J.C. Stewards winner, Cimab’ue, and The Monarch. Mr Lorigan was also associated with the fine galloper, Beaulivre, which numbered among his wins a Caulfield Cup and a Stewards’.

In the 1949-50 season, Mr Lorigan joined the New Zealand Racing Conference’s stipendiary panel and when he retired in 1963 he was the area steward in Canterbury. Mr Lorigan was for many Es a regular racegoer at North Island and South Island meetings.
