Prime stock, particularly lambs meet good demand

Prime lamb prices rose slightly and all other types of prime stock were in demand at the Addington market yesterday. Beef prices were steady, although the prime cattle yarding contained more plain quality cattle than in the last two sales. In the store stock sections, ewes with lambs at foot ex-

ceeded $l6 all counted and two consignments of station-bred cattle sold strongly. Prime lambs Last week’s easing in prices for light and medium iambs was almost regained in a firm sale for prime lambs. Most types were about fl ahead of last week’s sale and top butchers’ lambs were slightly ' dearer. '

The firming in price was attributed mostly to a small yarding of stock, only 1009 compared with 2475 last week. Values were— Heavy lambs, to $3O, with some sides to $32.40. Medium lambs, $24 to $25.80. Light lambs, $2O to $23.60. Sales included:—H. L. Pickering (Greta Valley), 51 at $23.W to $25.6% G. P. Griffiths

D. Henderson and Son (Halkett), 17 at $26.60 to $26.80. Prime sheep Another small yarding of prime old ewes and hoggets sold strongly, continuing the fine run of sales in recent weeks. The yarding was 900 compared with 880 last week. Buyers of old ewes looked for quality, resulting in heavy ewes in good order selling particularly well The market for plain ewes was not as buoyant, although prices were satisfactorv. Few hoggets were yarded. Farmer interest in woolly sheep was keen, with several heavily woolled old ewes exceeding $2O.

Values were— Best hoggets, to $29. Medium hoggets, $24.40 to $26.40. Light hoggets, $2O to $24. Best old ewes, to $lB, with woolly ewes to $22.60. Medium old ewes, $l4 to $l6. Prime cattle After two weeks of excellent quality yardings of prime cattle, yesterday’s offering was a mixed quality. Demand from buyers was not as strong as in the previous two sales, although prices for good quality cattle were fully firm, and in some cases slightly dearer. A few pens of plain cattle

would probably have sold better in the store cattle section. Cows again had a very strong sale. Spurtleton Downs, Omihi, received $BBO for a Hereford steer, M. R. Casey, Waipara, sold a Hereford-Friesian cross heifer at $720, and a Friesian cow from J. P. Stalker, Greenpark,' made $640. The cattle yarding was 447 compared with 683 last week. Prime steers and heifers to 220 kg sold between 215 c and 225 c a kilogram; from 220 kg to 270 kg, 215 c and 225 c; and over 270 kg, to 230 c. Values were:— Prime heavy steers, to $BBO. Bobby calves Most. Friesian bull calves sold between $3O and $7O in the bobby calf section. Frfesian heifers were $3O to $6B and good beef cross calves round $BO.

Store sheep A healthy demand for ewes with lambs at foot resulted in prices exceeding $l6 (all counted) for the first time this season. Shorn ewes and lambs sold to about $ll. However, the market for in lamb ewes was a fraction easier than last week. A line of one-shear Border-Romneys in full wool sold to $32.40, but several pens of woolly adult ewes in good order made from $2O to $26. Little interest was shown in two pens of twotooths. Sales included:— R. H. Ridgen (Greendale), 31 Border-Romney one-shear ewes at $32.40, 50 annual draft Coopworths at $26.60, and 258 Corriedales at $24.60 to $25.2% A. D Coles (Irwell), 180 Corriedales at $24.6% B. Shaw (Oxford), 57 ewes and 78 lambs at $15.20, and 54 ewes and 64 lambs at $l6; C. W. Powell (Irwell), 56 shorn ewes and 59 lambs at $11.60. Store cattle A yarding of about 750 store cattle, the biggest for several weeks, sold well, at prices reflecting recent increases in the beef export schedule. Most cattle were bought by local and Mid-Canterbury farmers, with a few cattle going to the West Coast Two lines of station-bred cattle attracted a lot of interest Steer calves from Winterslow station, Methveil, sold to $386, and Glynn Wye station, Lewis Pass, sold 20-month Hereford steers to $486.

Sales included:— Glynn Wye station (Lewis Pass), 166 Hereford 20-montb steers at $360 to $48% D. M. Fat .pigs Farmers and retail buyers showed strong interest in a medium-sized yarding of fat pigs. Values showed little change from last week's sale. Prices for a big yarding of choppers were firm also. Values were:— Light pork, $95 to $lO5. Medium to heavy pork, $lOB to $ll6. Light to medium bacon, $llB to $132. Heavy bacon, to $145.
