NZPA-AAP Karratha The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, believes his China Steel Plan has been vindicated by the announcement of a feasibility study into a new iron ore mine in Western Australia. Mr Hawke also predicted further opportunities for the Australian iron and steel industry to follow. Mr Hawke was referring to the signing of two agreements affecting the future of the iron ana steel indus-
tries in China and Australia. The first was a plan to eventually integrate the iron and steel industries of the two countries. The second was an agreement between Hamersley Iron Pty, Ltd, and China Metallurgical Import and Export Corporation for a feasibility study into opening a new mine on the Channber deposit near the town of Paraburdoo in Western Australia. Mr Hawke, Hamersley’s
managing director, Mr lan Burston, and the Metal Workers’ Union leader, Mr Jack Marks, were confident the study would lead to mine development The feasibility study was expected to begin almost immediately and the results could be known early next year.
