Summons sparks Arkansas clash
NZPA-AP Hot Springs A police summons for a routine traffic violation ended in a gunfight that left five people dead and two wounded yesterday. The dead included one man who was in a car stopped by a Hot Springs patrolman and four people who got embroiled when the ensuing battle spread to the
lobby of the Grand and Central Motor Queen, a motel four blocks away. Another man from the car was wounded and the Hot Springs patrolman was in critical condition, said an Arkansas state police spokeswoman. A third person who was in the car was being sought, she said. The policeman bad
stopped the car In front of a liquor store four blocks from the motel, exchanged gun-fire and was injured. He was taken to hospital and was in a serious condition, undergoing surgery. The car then raced to the motel, and the men ran into the bar adjoining the restaurant, said a state trooper. A waitress, in the bar said that
a man entered the bar and began shooting with a pump-shotgun. Four people were dead on arrival at hospital, and a fifth died in the emergency room, said a hospital spokesman. All had suffered gun-shot wounds, he said. Two other people were being treated for gun-shot wounds.
