Path out of freeze sought
PA Wellington Tripartite wage bargaining involving employers, unions, and the Government was being looked at as a way out of the freeze, said the incoming Minister of Trade and Industry and Associate Minister of Finance, Mr Caygill, last evening. Finding a path out of the freeze would be one of the main tasks of the economic summit to be called by the Labour Government in a few weeks, he said.
“Free wage bargaining is unlikely. We are looking at tripartite wage bargaining . . . ,” he said. The wages question had to be resolved this year, if necessary by legislation. He said that it was important for the economy to have a clear system for determining wages. “People cannot be expected to put their rate of pay on one side and concentrate on economic participation. We have to get the pay issue out of the way.”-..
