‘450 teachers to be recruited’
PA Wanganui Recruiting 450 new teachers for the fledgling reading recovery programme . is an immediate priority of the incoming Minister of Education, Mr Marshall. Mr Marshall said yesterday that implementing a full-scale reading recovery programme was his first priority “because one child in five is not learning to read.” “I have made the decision. We have the money and we are going to do it. The appointments should be made for February, 1985.” Mr Marshall foresaw no
problem getting Cabinet approval. Another top priority would be the lowering of the teacher-pupil ratio, to be implemented at the beginning of 1985, he said. University Entrance would be abolished because it was irrelevant. But it would take “a couple of years” because schools needed time to prepare for the change. Core curriculum discussions for primary and secondary schools would start soon, Mr Marshall said. He said that flag-flying at schools would be voluntary.
