Wake to a cold ath
NZPA staff correspondent London Government inspectors have taken exception to the order of the day at a North Yorkshire preparatory school — cold baths before breakfast. However, the headmaster, Mr John Knock, dismissed the inspectors’ criticism, saying, “The boys love it. If they were to be asked what they would most reluctantly give up, it would be the cold
bath every morning.” Mr Knock’s son, Anthony, the sports and English master at the family-owned school near York, said, “We are a very healthy school. I put this partly down to the fact that the boys take cold baths in the morning. “Life is tough and this helps them meet it.” Parents pay £790 (about $2000) a term a pupil at the school. The children are aged between five and 13.
Mr Knock sen. put aside the inspectors’ suggestion that the year-round cold baths practice should be revised. The inspectors were also critical of spartan conditions in dormitories and said that a lavatory and bathhouse were open to the elements at one end. The school has 70 pupils. Five of them are girls — and exempt from taking cold baths.
