Shipping news New vessel to call at Timaru
Timaru will be the second port of call for the new container vessel Jebsen Southland which is on her maiden voyage servicing the South-East Asia trade. The vessel is expected to arrive in Tauranga from Europe today and will berth at Timaru on August 3. Her keel was laid in a Hamburg shipyard in November last year and the Jebsen Line took delivery of her on June 20. The Jebsen Southland has been brought to New Zealand to replace the Sandra Wesch which has completed her oneyear charter contract. The new vessel is on a longterm charter to Jebsen from her owner, Scheper and Company, of Hamburg. The South Island manager for Jebsens, New Zealand, Ltd,
Mr Colin Lowery, said the Jebsen Southland had a larger cargo capacity and was more fuel efficient than the Sandra Wesch. The ship has a deadweight tonnage of 14,000 tons and can carry about 700 T.E.U. containers and about 80 refrigerated containers. She has two 40-ton cranes and features box-shaped holds. A special function will be held at the Port of Bluff on August 8 to mark the vessel’s maiden voyage. The bulk carrier Swibon is making her first call to Lyttelton to discharge about 7000 tonnes of phosphate. She is due to leave for Timaru at noon today.
