‘Strike cost Fiji $4M’
NZPA special correspondent Suva Fiji lost more than $4 million because of the fourday airport strike last week, says the Fiji Visitors’ Bureau general manager, Mr Malakai Gucake. The amount was based on the daily spending of tourists and did not take into account the loss to duty-free shops. The strike also lowered confidence in Fiji as a holiday destination, said the managing director of a leading Suva travel firm, Mr David Wilson. A substantial cancellation in bookings had occurred. “People looking at Fiji as a travel destination lose confidence in the country every time there is a disruption?’ Mr Wilson said. The president of the Fiji Hotel Association, Mr John Birch, said many people had cancelled their bookings because they could not delay their holiday.
