Humanism
Sir,—Like Conor Cruise O’Brien (“The Press,” July 25), we Humanists are concerned that Christians like Dr David Jenkins, the new Bishop of Durham, recently consecrated in York Minster, do not believe in the virgin birth or in the resurrection. Such ideas emanating from so-called Christians give us Humanists an identity crisis, es-
pecially as we thought that we were the priests of agnosticism and good reason. However, we need not worry, since Dr Jenkins has sufficiently numerous opponents who are sufficiently outstanding in their irrationality, that we Humanists can rest assured that there is still, in this not so modern world, plenty of superstition and silliness to keep us in business for the rest of time.—Yours, etc., CAROL HALPIN, Secretary, Humanist Society of N;Z. July 25, 1984.
