Links with South Africa
Sir,—Now that this country is free from Muldoonism we must get behind David Lange with his new deal as proposed in the election speech. But on the South African apartheid question the closing of the Consulate in Wellington would be detrimental to the trading interests of this country and boost the morale of pro-communist movements. While we continue to trade with countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia, and others we must continue to trade with South Africa. It must be remembered that white South Africa played a vital part in the two World Wars by defending the free world’s trade lifelines around the Cape against the common enemy. If those lines had been severed it would have meant curtains for the once-great British Empire and the free world. — Yours, etc., L. WESTNEY. July 23, 1984.
