Nelson radio in FM stereo
Radio Fifeshire, Nelson’s part-time private radio station, plans to broadcast in FM stereo this summer. This will be the third summer the station has been in operation, having broadcast for four weeks in January, 1983, and 6% weeks last summer. Fifeshire’s station manager, Mr Kevin Ihaia, said the broadcast period dates had yet to be finalised, because he had to confirm the availability of stereo equipment. “Whilst we have yet to lodge a short-term application, we are confident of obtaining the necessary Broadcasting Tribunal approval to do so, due to the public interest in our previous broadcasts,” he said.
Mr Ihaia said that for some time Radio Fifeshire has been hoping to introduce full-time commercial FM radio in Nelson. This summer’s broadcast would concentrate more on music programming, rather than the previous emphasis on a large amount of promotional and holiday activities, he said. The station is progressing with plans for a full-time stereo FM warrant, although details of its proposed corporate structure and financing methods are not yet available.
