No slink collections

No collection of dead baby lambs will be carried out by Slink Skins (Canterbury), Ltd this spring because of a collapse in the market for lamb skins. Japan, which has been the main consumer in the last 10 years for high quality larger size skins, still has stock left over from the 1982 season caused by an influx of cheap mink and fox coats from Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

It is predicted that this carry-over of skins will not be cleared until September, 1985.

Mr J. S. Chisholm, manager of Slink Skins (Canterbury), said collecting and processing skins in Canterbury this season would only add to the stocks of unsold skins, further depressing the price and delaying the recovery of the market

Limited demand existed in the United Kingdom for skins of the type produced in Canterbury, but this market could be serviced adequately from existing stocks. A return to normal operation and full production is hoped in 1985.

Slink Skins (N.Z.), Ltd, which markets the skins, has been perfecting tanning techniques in recent years and this year will tan a substantial quantity of skins in New Zealand, concentrating on the higher fashion grades. Sales have been made to many countries.
