Canterbury ploughing
Mr Peter Carter, of Greenpark, has won the 1984 Canterbury ploughing championship, sponsored by Prebble Seeds, of Christchurch.
Mr Carter finished the nine events with 201 points, four ahead of Mr Alan Begg, of Wakanui, on 197. Third was Mr Bruce Redmond, of Methven, on 191; fourth Mr Bruce Smith, Broadfield, 184, and fifth Mr Ivan Maw, Methven, 175. The novice ploughman award went to Mr Neville Copland, Rakaia, who was the highest points getter who had not competed in a New Zealand final.
The final three ploughing matches in the Canterbury province for the 1984 season were held last week at Rakaia, Methven and Hinds. Winners of the Mobil Silver Plough class at these events were Messrs A. Begg, N. Copland and R. McKenzie respectively. These three now join six other ploughmen who oualfied at the Canterbury matches for next year’s Mobil Silver Plough at Gore, in May. These are: Messrs D. Brown, Temuka; Ivan Maw, G. Gifford, Blenheim; P. Carter, B. Redmond and B. Smith.
