Hui for treaty consensus

PA Auckland Maoridom will air its views on the Treaty of Waitangi at a national meeting at Ngaruawahia in September. The meeting, called by Maori church leaders headed by a former Bishop of Aotearoa, Manu Bennett, aims to seek Maori con'sensus on treaty issues. The Council of Maori Churches is concerned about

the division the issues are causing among Maori groups. About 1600 people are expected to attend the hui at Turangawaewae Marae from September 14 to 16. The organisers hope that Maori people nationally will meet in small family and sub-tribal (hapu) groups to discuss the issues before the national meeting. “We then hope they will appoint a spokesperson to represent their views at the

hui,” the Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Hiwi Tauroa, said. “We are asking them to tell us what they feel about the treaty so we can collate it all,” he said. “We are not expecting to get consensus on everything, but there are some things we will get agreement on.” To help the discussions, the organisers are sending papers outlining different views to Maori organisations.
