Views on China

Sir, — I congratulate “The Press” for printing Giles Mathews’ further expose on life in China. In the West, we are told that China has its problems but it is coming right, or “look what communism has done for China.” Giles Mathews paints a much grimmer picture. Fifteen to 20 million deaths by starvation in 1959 to 1961, 4 million refugees to Hong Kong since 1960, and rampant crime and corruption are hardly hallmarks of a progressive society. They are indicators of tyranny and barbarism on a mass scale. Mr Mathews makes the point that our acceptance of these outrages is insulting to the Chinese people. It is an indictment of the underlying racism in New Zealand, that while compulsory birth control, constant propaganda, and suppression of individuality etc. are considered all right for the Chinese, they are definitely not acceptable for those of European descent. — Yours, etc., T. R. LOUDON. July 17, 1984. 1
