Aust. market steadier
Australian sharemarkets closed steadier as investor confidence grew and buyers outweighed sellers despite mixed signals from overseas. The all-ordinaries index was 4.4 points firmer qt 683.3 pointe, the all-industri-als marker was up 42 to 968.6, and the all-resources index was 4.4 higher at 461.2. National turnover was 37.2 million shares, worth sAustso.B million, with rises outnumbering falls by two to one. Brokers said the initial nervousness, that soon gave way to strong buying support, reflected a mixed close on the London exchange, a sharply lower Wall Street, but firmer gold and metal prices. In the golds and metals group, Consolidated Rutile rose 10c to 450 c, MIM 7c to 282, North Broken Hill and Western Mining both 6c to 215 and 302, and Poseidon and Peko each 5 to 325 and 425. GMK, however, shed 10 to 680. Bougainville lost three to 160, after a disappointing production report Among diversified resource issues, BHP gained 10 to 968 and CSR 3 to 322.
